Temporal changes in the phytoplankton community along the French coast of the eastern English Channel and the southern Bight of the North Sea ArchiMer
Hernandez- Farinas, Tania; Soudant, Dominique; Barille, Laurent; Belin, Catherine; Lefebvre, Alain; Bacher, Cedric.
Long-term trends in the phytoplankton community along the French coast of the English Channel and southern Bight of the North Sea were studied and related to physico-chemical factors and large-climatic indices. Phytoplankton and hydrological data were acquired through three transects. Sampling took place between 1992 and 2011 as part of the French Phytoplankton Monitoring Network (REPHY) and the Regional Nutrients Monitoring Network (SRN). Trends in time-series were identified with dynamic linear models tailored to environmental monitoring data characteristics (e.g. irregular sampling frequency, missing data). Temporal and spatial patterns in the phytoplankton community were explained with a partial triadic analysis. Relationships between the phytoplankton...

Testing arbitrary classes of light in a physiognomically heterogeneous area of "campo rupestre" vegetation Anais da ABC (AABC)
MOREIRA,ANA S.F.P.; BORBA,EDUARDO L.; LEMOS-FILHO,JOSE P..
The Brazilian "campo rupestre" vegetation shows high light heterogeneity, characteristic which is often disregarded in ecophysiological studies due the difficult of obtaining accurate measurements in a complex environment. The aim of the present study it was to describe how much heterogeneous is the light distribution in this environment, as well as tried to define classes in relation to the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) for 30 rupicolous individuals of Bulbophyllum involutum. The individuals were marked and previously classified in light classes visually predetermined ("full sun", "partially shaded" and "shaded"). Once defined these classes, principal component analysis, cluster and dispersal analyses using direct and indirect PAR measures...

Testing multivariate analysis in paleoenvironmental reconstructions using pollen records from Lagoa Salgada, NE Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Toledo,Mauro B. de; Barth,Ortrud M.; Silva,Cleverson G.; Barros,Marcia A..
Despite the indisputable significance of identification of modern analogs for Paleoecology research, relatively few studies attempted to integrate modern and fossil samples on paleoenvironmental reconstructions. In Palynology, this general pattern is not different from other fields of Paleoecology. This study demonstrates the practical application of modern pollen deposition data on paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on fossil pollen by using multivariate analysis. The main goal of this study was to use Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) to compare pollen samples from two sediment cores collected at Lagoa Salgada, a coastal lagoon located at northeastern Rio de Janeiro State. Furthermore, modern surface samples were also statistically compared...

The association of CAPN1 316 marker genotypes with growth and meat quality traits of steers finished on pasture Genet. Mol. Biol.
Miquel,María C.; Villarreal,Edgardo; Mezzadra,Carlos; Melucci,Lilia; Soria,Liliana; Corva,Pablo; Schor,Alejandro.
The objective of this paper was to determine the association of a SNP in the µ-calpain gene at position 316 with growth and quality of meat traits of steers grown on pasture. Fifty-nine Brangus and 20 Angus steers were genotyped for CAPN1 316. Warner Bratzler shear force was measured in l. lumborum samples after a 7-day aging period. A multivariate analysis of variance was performed, including shear force (WBSF), final weight (FW), average daily gain (ADG), backfat thickness (BFT), average monthly fat thickness gain (AMFTG), rib-eye area (REA), and beef rib-eye depth (RED) as dependent variables. The CAPN1 316 genotype was statistically significant. Univariate analyses were done with these variables. The marker genotype was statistically significant (p...

The birds at Ilha Comprida beach (São Paulo State, Brazil): a multivariate approach Biota Neotropica
Barbieri,Edison; Paes,Eduardo Tavares.
Birds were censused weekly from January 1999 to January 2001 along Ilha Comprida beach, a barrier island off São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. To evaluate the similarity in the bird's species composition among the weekly surveys, species counts data were arranged on a data matrix with 144 weekly surveys, analyzed following a multivariate analysis protocol. We counted a total of 205,399 individuals and 52 species. Migratory birds were an important component of the avifauna (maximum N = 21,294 individuals and 14 species). The largest numbers of birds were observed during summer, when Nearctic migrants arrive. All 14 of the most common species were migrants, including Calidris alba, Sterna maxima, Charadrius semipalmatus, Sterna hirundo, Thalasseus maximus,...

The effect of heavy metal contamination on the bacterial community structure at Jiaozhou Bay, China BJM
Yao,Xie-feng; Zhang,Jiu-ming; Tian,Li; Guo,Jian-hua.
Abstract In this study, determination of heavy metal parameters and microbiological characterization of marine sediments obtained from two heavily polluted sites and one low-grade contaminated reference station at Jiaozhou Bay in China were carried out. The microbial communities found in the sampled marine sediments were studied using PCR-DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) fingerprinting profiles in combination with multivariate analysis. Clustering analysis of DGGE and matrix of heavy metals displayed similar occurrence patterns. On this basis, 17 samples were classified into two clusters depending on the presence or absence of the high level contamination. Moreover, the cluster of highly contaminated samples was further classified into two...

ABSTRACT: The green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a nutrient-rich vegetable much appreciated; although, little studied, in Brazil. The aim of the current study was to investigate the nature of traits of interest, as well as to select plants for the green bean breeding program based on genotype vs. trait biplot analysis. The experiment followed a randomized block design, with 4 repetitions and 17 genotypes. Analysis of variance, principal component analysis and biplot charts were performed to analyze the number of pods per plant, the number of seeds per pod, the number of seeds per plant, seed weight per plant, 100-seed weight, as well as grain and pod yields. The analysis of variance showed genetic variability between genotypes. Grain yield, pod yield...

The taxonomic status of Myotis levis levis and Myotis levis dinellii (Mammalia: Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Miranda,João M. D.; Bernardi,Itiberê P.; Sponchiado,Jonas; Passos,Fernando C..
Investigating the Myotis levis complex is important for understanding the taxonomic status of the two subspecies currently recognized in it: Myotis levis levis (I. Geoffroy, 1824) and M. levis dinellii Thomas, 1902. Both M. levis levis and M. levis dinellii have been recently observed in sympatry in Argentina. This finding suggests that these populations might in fact correspond to distinct species rather than subspecies, as they have traditionally been designated. By using a multivariate morphometric approach, we demonstrate that M. l. levis has secondary sexual dimorphism in several measurements, with females being larger than males; sexual dimorphism was not detected in M. levis dinellii. However, we found morphometric differences between the two taxa....

Time of catheter removal in candidemia and mortality BJID
Nucci,Marcio; Braga,Paula Rocha; Nouér,Simone A.; Anaissie,Elias.
ABSTRACT Background: The impact of central venous catheter (CVC) removal on the outcome of patients with candidemia is controversial, with studies reporting discrepant results depending on the time of CVC removal (early or any time during the course of candidemia). Objective: Evaluate the effect of time to CVC removal, early (within 48 h from the diagnosis of candidemia) vs. removal at any time during the course of candidemia, on the 30-day mortality. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 285 patients with candidemia analyzing CVC removal within 48 h (first analysis) or at any time (second analysis). Results: A CVC was in place in 212 patients and was removed in 148 (69.8%), either early (88 patients, 41.5%) or late (60 patients, 28.3%). Overall, the...

Typologie biosédimentaire de la baie de Saint-Brieuc (Manche ouest), et estimation de la biomasse des catégories trophiques macrozoobenthiques. ArchiMer
Gros, Philippe; Hamon, Dominique.
The aim of this report is to provide biomass estimates (AFDW, g.m-2 ) of the four main components of the benthic food web in the southern part of the Bay of St-Brieuc: suspension-feeders, deposit-feeders, herbivores and carnivores. Patterns in the environmental data (i.e., sedimentary characters) are first analysed, and then related to the spatial distribution of communities ; both approaches use classical ordination techniques (PCA, correspondence analysis). A second typology, based on a review of published litterature concerning coastal macrozoobenthos feeding, ascribes each taxonomic unit to a trophic group. Finally, quantitative results are thus given per biota ; suspension-feeders appear to dominate (in terms of biomass) most of fine-sand habitats of...

Typologie de la flottille chalutière du port de Sète par une méthode de segmentation ArchiMer
Taquet, Marc; Gaertner, Jean-claude; Bertrand, Jacques.
This work aims to define a typology of trawler f1eet in Sète, the main fishing harbour along the French Mediterranean coast, using several multivariate analysis methods. The fishing ships taken to account are represented by annual profiles of landing specific compositions. Five fishing strategies have been identified. A segmentation method using symbolic objects allows a formaI characterisation of the different strategies. These strategies are studied according to several general characteristics usually used for management rules elaboration (power, length, ship age). The typological analysis allows to characterise two main exploitation ways, one directed to the catch of a few species (Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardus), the other characterised by...

Typologie de l'activité de Pêche en Guadeloupe ArchiMer
Maguer, Cedric; Reynal, Lionel; Taquet, Marc.
This work aims to describe fishing activity in Guadeloupe through a typology. The samply unit y is the landing represented by a profile of specific composition. Using multivariate analysis methods allows to synthesize this fishing multi specises and multi fishing tackles. Principal Component Analysis and classification regroup landings. Then, segmentation method separateses classes by species composition. Typology is obtained by association of classes and tackles. The contraist between landings of reef fishes realized with traps and those which search for pelagics is clearly shown. Landings of queen conch and landings without fishes are separated in two classes.

Visual assessment of pasture degradation: validation by ground cover and seasonal variation Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Monteiro,Edevaldo de Castro; Burak,Diego Lang; Cunha,Alexson de Mello; Passos,Renato Ribeiro; Mendonça,Eduardo de Sá.
ABSTRACT Visual assessments of pasture degradation levels are widespread because they are rapid, practical and inexpensive. However, they can be subjective, making it difficult to distinguish between degradation levels to establish management practices. This fact, in association with the lack of standardization of the number of levels and the assessment periods, suggests a need for further studies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relation between the degradation levels of visually evaluated pastures and the soil cover measured in fields in summer and winter. Percentages of Brachiaria grass, bare soil, spontaneous vegetation (broad and narrow leaf) and mulch were evaluated in 35 areas with different levels of visual degradation. Canonical...
